Many, many of the buildings in Downtown San Antonio have very rich history behind them and St Mary's Catholic Church is no exception. Right off the river, as soon as you walk in you can feel a heavy history within its walls. My wife and I walked in to experience this church during its visiting hours and we swear something leached on to us by the time we walked out of this building. The experience alone was a chilling thrill to say the least. As much as one can say about this experience, I feel less is more in this circumstance.

  • I was really moved by the sincerity, warmth,Christianity of the people and priest worshiping. Basically it is one of the most beautiful churches,i have ever visited. Reverence for Jesus and Mary, and a solid prayer aspect were seen by this observant. Incense, gently tipped at the nose evoking a "vatican like,' experience. The sacrament of Holy Communion was given in the modern style with participants lined up and the elements distributed by a couple of "lay people,". This means they are just like you and i with no formal religious training. But i wouldn't mind kneeling at the altar and holding my hands out, a comination of the modern practice of holding the hands out for acceptance of the eucharist, and the older more traditional pre Vatican 2 practice of going to the altar. But pre Vatican 2 they had the elements placed in their mouths and i wwould be, i guess fearful the element would fall and it sems more awkward for the priest. So hence a great combination of old and 'new.' Anyway, the congeniality surprised me. This is a downtown church. This is not a suburban church. Families with all ages children including teenagers would find a warm and safe, a welcoming church home i think, at St. Mary's. Give it a try.

  • This church is a very beautiful church designed and decorated to make visitors feel the presence of the Lord and his Holy mother. Though lacking a vibrant choir when we visited, parishioners were friendly, visitors were welcomed and acknowledged and the parish priest was a very friendly and hospitable man of God. The lagniappe was attending the mass officiated by the Archbishop of San Antonio. Great experience and Ambience.

This is a by far the most beautiful church I have seen, the lighting of the candles and the prayer room is gorgeous. But sadly there is no blood of Christ, I have never been to a Catholic Mass where I did not drink the blood of Christ so that is why I am giving this Church a 3 star, plus I did not feel very welcome. It's a beautiful church though. I will light my candles and pray to the Virgin Mary before I leave.

  • It has been many years since I have attended Mass at St. Mary's but I recall loving this Church. Besides Holy Redeemer, St. Anthony Mary Claret and St. Brigid, it is one of my favorite Churches in San Antonio!
